Permit for LBC terminals in Vlissingen and Frontrunner Award for hydrogen plans
LBC Vlissingen has taken the next step in the development of the Green Energy Hub in the Sloehaven. The Province of Zeeland has granted a permit for the planned tank terminal for the storage of methanol, biodiesel, and ammonia. Shortly thereafter, LBC received the Koploper Award from Nederland Waterstofland during the North Sea Port Conference.
Permit for new terminal
The permit concerns the development of a new terminal for the bulk storage of methanol, biodiesel, and ammonia. The application, originally submitted by Evolution Terminals, which was fully acquired by LBC Tank Terminals in November 2024, provides for a total storage capacity of 850,000 m³, distributed across methanol, ammonia, and biodiesel, and also includes the construction of a quay for water transport.
LBC indicates that up to 400,000 m³ of storage capacity is planned for the first phase. According to current planning, the first activities are scheduled for 2029. The decisions are available for inspection up to and including October 29, 2026. Additionally, a separate permit process is underway regarding potential impacts on Natura 2000 areas.
Part of the Green Energy Hub
The terminal is part of the broader plans for a Green Energy Hub in Vlissingen. LBC is working there on infrastructure for the import, storage, and distribution of new energy carriers and low-carbon fuels. In later phases, plans include the expansion of storage capacity and the conversion of imported ammonia into hydrogen. Investigations are also underway into how the location can connect to future European hydrogen infrastructure.
Frontrunner Award for LBC
During the North Sea Port Conference 2026, held on September 21 in Ghent, LBC received the Frontrunner Award from Nederland Waterstofland. Alexander Fokker, Managing Director of LBC Vlissingen & Duisburg, accepted the award. Nederland Waterstofland presented the prize for LBC's plans for large-scale import and storage of ammonia and its further integration with hydrogen production and infrastructure.
